The Irish are 6-0 that’s like the New York Mets going for the pennant or Brooklyn some how changing the Nets into a winning franchise…ITS JUST UNBELIEVABLE!!! America’s football team is back in the top 5 and they’re charging through the season like mad brutes on a rampage. This team has been written off time and time again and the element of randomness that has come with their six victories can only be rooted in a coaching staff’s renewed response to the demand of excellence and three team members that come from completely different ends of this country. The victories have cemented why The Fighting Irish are the number one sold collegiate product in the nation rivaling that of Manchester United of the Premier League and The New York Yankees whose brands are sold internationally.
Tomorrow’s match-up against Brigham Young University will prove to be a pivotal one as the Cougars whose record 4-3 does not come off as threatening but is not reflective of their offensive and defensive potency as two of their three loses have come against AP 25 teams.
The Irish may be down starter as QB Everett Golson; who suffered a concussion after he was downed Saturday night in what many view to be a premeditated and malicious attack by Stanford’s Usua Amanam, is doubtful after being cleared earlier by team physicians. Everett and his ability to be mobile inside and outside of the pocket has been integral to the Irish offense after taking the starting job from Senior Tommy Reese on the teams trip to Dublin at the beginning of the season. While the red shirt freshman has had some turn over troubles there is no doubt that he will be missed if can not take at least a third of the snaps in order to throw off the BYU defense.
The second piece of the puzzle is junior Tommy Rees who has come into game during some of the most crucial moments and led definitive drives that have brought dramatic and instant classic victories back to South Bend, Indiana. Rees in last weeks game not only led the Irish to overtime but drove them in for victory number six. He is mature on the line can read the defense and knows how to operate an offense in the audible. ESPN analyst and former Irish coach Lou Holtz says that this team needs to find their offense…um yeah if you’re a traditional football team which the Irish are not.
The third leg of this team is Senior linebacker and team captain Manti Te’o who after losing two people close to him in his girlfriend (Lost a battle to cancer) and his grandmother within days of each other has shown resiliency not just in his ability to show up for practice but to take hardship and loss and turn it into something positive in life and on the gridiron. He is a force to be reckoned with and god knows the New York Football Giants could use his speed and strength to fill gaps in their squad next year. Manti is the corner stone to this entire team not just the defense and Coach Kelly is one lucky S.O.B. to have this young man.
Tomorrow’s game will either be Coach Kelly’s shining moment to show dominance on both side of the ball. Will The Fighting Irish go 7-0? Tune in at 3:30 PM EST on NBC to find out.
(Post Publish Fact: Everette Rees will be starting tomorrow)
